Gigabit USB->Ethernet Adapters - Do they make sense? - pcmcia gigabit
USB is only 300-400 Mb / s, but get gigib Ethernet 1000Mbit/sec should.
As a USB -> Ethernet adapter is gigib possible? You sell.
Has anyone one of these devices, and if so, what are your experiences with them.
Objective:
I believe that with an old laptop to build a firewall / router print server, 10MB of built-in card to the Ethernet adapter and a quick change. The PCMCIA slot of your laptop has failed.

While the USB adapter will never be a G support in human beings, it is more than the current standard 10/100 Mbps
The rule of the day it is connected to which side 10/100/1000 Ethernet adapter.
In all cases. the bottleneck in your project is to IAS 10 MB, so there's always a problem.
This is where I stay in my 2 cents
After my humble opinion - are less problems and get better if you have a SOHO routers have and use it to reserve the firewall / router rights.
Then configure the old laptop as a file server / print only with the integrated NIC.
I think you'll find that the system is easier to maintain, more reliable and faster because the old laptop is very depressed and very old working laptops tend to have problems running 24 / 7

Yes, make this make sense .. 400MBit/Sec is faster than 100 megabits per second, directly below your choice .. And 1000Mbit per second is the theoretical maximum over a short cable in perfect condition, no crashes .. In fact, it is unlikely that anywhere near that, get the speed in a copper Ethernet cable.
If you are using an old laptop, probably USB is USB 1.0 with 4 megabits per second, then I would get a 100 megabit connection, if the switch is .. Otherwise, autosensing, if you have 100Mbit wired one to work on all networks, 100Mbit, in this case, a Gigabit makes sense!
